Q. For years I have read that drinking coffee may lead to calcium loss in the bones and worsen osteoporosis. Is this true? I hate to give up my coffee. What can I do to help keep my bones strong?

Closing Starbucks are symbols of lost luxury
Roby T. Chapel's history with Starbucks is long and sweet. He can recall his first gourmet coffee drink, 10 years ago at a Starbucks in Beverly Hills. "It was a Caramel Macchiato, and I took it back to my office and nursed it for, like, three hours," he said. "I remember saying, 'Oh my God, now I know what people are talking about.' After work that day, I went right back."

Coffee crusade
Coffee drinkers know how they want their coffee -- from Starbucks. Now those Starbucks lovers have become part of the Save Our Starbucks campaign -- writing letters, making phone calls and circulating petitions in an effort to get the company to change its mind about closing shops.

One less perk for city coffee lovers
LOWELL -- Bleary-eyed customers looking for their morning fix at Cafe Aiello had a rude awakening yesterday. Instead of the whir of the cappuccino maker, they were met with a locked door and a hand-written sign that said: "I have had to close the store. I'm very sorry, Aaron."

Coffee shop opening a test of owner's faith It took almost a year more than planned to get Blue Line Coffee going in north downtown. Grand opening
Chris McClellan could see the doubt in people's eyes. The owner of Blue Line Coffee said even he doubted he would succeed at opening a second store. Coffeehouse owners with philosophy degrees, a commitment to fair-trade coffee and "teach peace" pins on their aprons aren't your typical portrait of ambition, not your usual go-to person to help transform a blighted city block into a profitable commercial venture. So with each little mistake or miscommunication that delayed the opening date, he understood why people wondered if there ever would be a Blue Line store in north downtown.

Some towns got just a sip of Starbucks Washington store due to shut after 3 months
washington, mo. - Starbucks, they hardly knew you. When a stand-alone Starbucks store opened here seven months ago, it was the first of its kind in the entire county. True, a smaller Starbucks outpost already existed at the Target store in the same shopping center. But this full-fledged Starbucks was the real deal. It had the sophisticated ambience Starbucks is renowned for, plus a small outdoor patio and drive-thru lane. On a recent summer day, it looked busy. The store seemed to signal the town's arrival, retail-wise. Now this Starbucks is slated to be closed.

Lessons learned from Starbucks
Starbucks, the chain of coffee shops whose very ubiquity proclaimed a robust business climate and Americans' willingness to pay top dollar for premium coffee and other nonessential indulgences, is now a symbol of another sort. The chain, which will close 616 company-owned stores -- including one in Chattanooga -- by the first half of next year, is a high-profile victim of the nation's trying economy.

Bearclaw Coffee gets roomy boost
MUNDY TWP. - It feels like it's up north, but it's in Mundy Township at Bearclaw Coffee Co. It's serving up more than just coffee - it's also a place to meet. Bearclaw opened last year at 6004 Torrey Road but is under new ownership now and added a conference room in June that ties in with the up-north decor.

Lattes a luxury for startups
I thought I was the cheapskate, until I saw how Seattle startups are trying to save money nowadays. They're getting especially creative when it comes to coffee, the fuel that powers a lot of software development around here. Some are buying their own espresso machines; others are cadging free coffee. One consultant has resorted to diluting her morning cup in a water bottle so it lasts all day.

Coffee, tea or melee?
Man walks into a coffee shop. "Triple shot of espresso over ice," he says. The barista hands the man the triple espresso and a cup of ice, but he tells the man he will have to mix the espresso and ice himself because this is "really, really not OK." Espresso should never be diluted.

Cafe offers Web, ambience, tunes and lots of joe
EUSTIS -- If your computer or Internet service is on the blink, you might consider checking out Bay Street Coffee. Not only does the cafe at 616 S. Bay St. in the Bay Street Plaza offer patrons free Internet, but it provides free use of laptops. Husband and wife co-owners and operators Andrea and Steve Kolozsvary opened the cafe in March. They also sell sandwiches, desserts, smoothies and specialty beverages.

Grounds for $30 coffee?
Friday's article "Who Would Pay $30 for a Cup of Coffee?" caught my eye, as well as where the high-priced coffee beans come from: the droppings of the Asian Palm Civet.

Starbucks pulling plug on 9 BR coffee shops
Starbucks Corp., which said earlier this week it will close two Baton Rouge coffee shops by the end of the month, will close seven more by March 2009. The Seattle-based coffee giant's closure plan appears to hit Baton Rouge harder than most cities, leaving only four locations open. Its pullback in Baton Rouge leaves market share for competitors, which include Baton Rouge-based Community Coffee's CC's Community Coffee House, PJ's Coffee of New Orleans and local mainstays such as Perk's Coffee & Tea on Perkins Road and Highland Coffees near LSU.

Starbucks' exit leaves some areas wondering; For communities such as Lawndale, cafe signified promise of better days
It was midmorning Friday at Starbucks in Lawndale and insurance agent Kimberly Brown, her papers spread out on a round table by the window, talked quietly with a client. Fred Cager stopped in to order his usual -- his first grande decaf of the day -- and savor the edgy jazz. Out back, behind Starbucks' drive-through lane, David Garner strode by on his way to buy birthday presents for his brother and sister. The 20-year-old sometimes stops in Starbucks to read or talk with friends. "It's like the only really peaceful place around," Garner said.
