Rachel Maddow Grills Dr. Evil (aka Rick Berman)

October 7, 2009

There were a few good moments during last night’s Rachel Maddow Show. The best came during an interview with Rick Berman, a former Brinker International executive-turned-public affairs specialist (see videos below). The Washington, D.C.-based Berman opposes many liberal causes via a variety of Web sites, the most popular of which is consumerfreedom.com.
Many people, especially liberals like Rachel Maddow, write the sites off as nothing more than fronts for businesses that would suffer financially if left-wing initiatives became reality. Maddow wasn’t bashful about saying so.
Berman’s consumerfreedom.com, for instance, is currently debunking "obesity science." Restaurants, especially fast-feeders, have been blamed by advocacy groups for contributing to adult and childhood obesity. Already, several cities have enacted menu labeling laws in an effort to fight fatness.
But if restaurant chains are supporting Berman’s opposition to the food police by way of a Web site he’s not saying. Which frustrates Maddow.
"If you  admitted that," the left-of-center host declared, "nobody would call you Dr. Evil anymore. They’d just call you a PR guy." The colorful moniker was bestowed upon Berman by CBS, Maddow explained.
Berman is under no obligation to reveal which companies support him, or if indeed any companies support him at all. In the case of his opposition to ACORN, the troubled community organization, he insisted he paid for the Web site rottenacorn.com  himself.
Berman can keep his cards close to his chest because the Web sites are set up as non-profit organizations, which by law do not have to disclose their sponsors. Berman made that point abundantly clear after Maddow charged that he agreed to come on the show only because he didn’t have to say who’s paying him to spout an industry’s line.
Berman quickly protested. "Then you can’t have anyone from the left or right on your show who is connect to these non-profit organizations because they won’t tell you who’s funding them."
"And you think that’s wrong?" Maddow weakly laughed.
"I think they are entitled to do that," Berman said. Touché!

Joe, come on you can't believe that? He speaks for the $$$$$$$, not for front line restaurant operations staff. Look at your team, how many does he speak for. What has he done to help your staff? Your team? Lobbying pays big! The chains that have been supporting him are not thinking about thier employees.

Despite the hunger from the left to squash every single freedom idea, Maddow and most that feel like her live in a BOX, they have no idea what the real worl is like. Berman might have some faults, however his believe is strong and he does speak for many Americans that feal the Government is taking over and taking away all our rights. Why are we talkinh Politics in a Food Mag.

Berman's work hurts the industry. His columns in the trade mags are filled with junk science that do nothing but attempt to inflame people. His work basically turned the National Restaurant Association into a bunch of Republican cheerleaders on donors, fighting minimum wage laws with slanted data, fighting nutritional disclosure with lies about cost and trade secrets, funneling industry dollars to K Street so he could keep his standing with Delay and Rove, and the list goes on. Berman is a disgrace and is the reason I, and my mid-size operations, no longer belong to so-called "trade groups."

Rachel Madcow is only interested in putting down conservatism and free enterprise in any way possible. Obviously, she feels that only her view is allowable in our society. Typical of NBC to support her.

In her own interpretation of "shoot the messenger", it was interesting to note that Rachel Maddow was interested only in who was paying for the research not the science or findings themselves. In the 60 MInutes profile, Berman had this to say about obesity: "If it's true that we have an obesity epidemic, it will be the first in the history of mankind that can be eliminated by closing your mouth and going for a walk." What we have is a "victimization epidemic" - always looking to put the responsibility on someone else.

According to public records filed by public restaurant companies and his personal comments at and during NRA public events. His income from lobbing on behalf of chain restaurants is in excess of $2,000,000 per year! He does have a small staff dictated to chain restaurant concerns. He is one could gather paid much more than he ever made at Brinker by 10 fold.
