Rachel Maddow Grills Dr. Evil (aka Rick Berman)
There were a few good moments during last night’s Rachel Maddow Show. The best came during an interview with Rick Berman, a former Brinker International executive-turned-public affairs specialist (see videos below). The Washington, D.C.-based Berman opposes many liberal causes via a variety of Web sites, the most popular of which is consumerfreedom.com.
Many people, especially liberals like Rachel Maddow, write the sites off as nothing more than fronts for businesses that would suffer financially if left-wing initiatives became reality. Maddow wasn’t bashful about saying so.
Berman’s consumerfreedom.com, for instance, is currently debunking "obesity science." Restaurants, especially fast-feeders, have been blamed by advocacy groups for contributing to adult and childhood obesity. Already, several cities have enacted menu labeling laws in an effort to fight fatness.
But if restaurant chains are supporting Berman’s opposition to the food police by way of a Web site he’s not saying. Which frustrates Maddow.
"If you admitted that," the left-of-center host declared, "nobody would call you Dr. Evil anymore. They’d just call you a PR guy." The colorful moniker was bestowed upon Berman by CBS, Maddow explained.
Berman is under no obligation to reveal which companies support him, or if indeed any companies support him at all. In the case of his opposition to ACORN, the troubled community organization, he insisted he paid for the Web site rottenacorn.com himself.
Berman can keep his cards close to his chest because the Web sites are set up as non-profit organizations, which by law do not have to disclose their sponsors. Berman made that point abundantly clear after Maddow charged that he agreed to come on the show only because he didn’t have to say who’s paying him to spout an industry’s line.
Berman quickly protested. "Then you can’t have anyone from the left or right on your show who is connect to these non-profit organizations because they won’t tell you who’s funding them."
"And you think that’s wrong?" Maddow weakly laughed.
"I think they are entitled to do that," Berman said. Touché!
