No Child Should Grow Up Hungry
April 5, 2009
12 million children in the U.S. have to worry about getting enough food to eat. That is one in six. And the trends on childhood hunger are getting worse, not better. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that during periods of high unemployment food can be scarce on the tables of some families. Many families are forced to make the budget stretch by buying food last. The house can be foreclosed on, renters can be evicted, cars can be repossessed, electricity can be turned off, but no one notices if you don’t buy enough food. No one except the children.
You and your restaurant can help. Last year 4,000 restaurants, 15 sponsors, and millions of customers participated in Share Our Strength’s first annual Great American Dine Out. The results boosted sales for participating restaurants, gave customers, employees and management teams that warm glow from doing something good, and made a big dent in childhood hunger. This year the results should be even bigger since fighting hunger is more top of mind for your customers because of the economy.
Share Our Strength is the leading national organization working to make sure that no kid in America grows up hungry. They weave together a net of community groups and food programs to catch children at risk of hunger, and ensure that they have nutritious food where they live, learn and play.

Share Our Strength’s second annual Great American Dine Out is being held from September 20-26, 2009. Several thousand restaurants and several million customers will come together in an initiative to benefit kids. The entire industry, from snack bars to fine dining, will be participating in this very flexible program that helps the industry while helping children. The program is limited only by your organization’s creativity:
· Customize and market your own Great American Dine Out coupon to customers
· Promote a specific item and donate all or a portion of the proceeds from the purchase
· Donate a percentage of total sales during Great American Dine Out week
· Challenge customers to make their own donations, matched by the restaurant
· Leverage relationships with local TV, radio, or newspapers to promote your participation
· Secure a matching grant from a supplier or other business partner
· Rally employees with a contest to raise the most in donations
· Co-host a special Great American Dine Out dinner with a vendor or local celebrity
· Create your own way of helping

During this time of great need, participating in the Great American Dine Out is another way to show your employees and customers the caring side of your organization. In addition, there is nothing wrong with getting a little sales help while you are giving a little help. The more that you leverage your participation in the program the better the results for you and the kids. Share Our Strength will be running a national marketing and PR campaign asking customers to look online for participating restaurants in their area. You will want to be one of those restaurants.
How do you participate? It’s so easy that there is no excuse to not do it. Go online at GreatAmericanDineout.org and check out the details and the online marketing program support. Or, e-mail the program director, Sheila Bennett, at SBennett@Strength.org. You can help a lot of children by helping your own organization build sales.
The cure for cancer is still just out of reach. The cure for hunger is not. Be a part of the cure.

Our chain participated last year and we got good feedback from our customers and our employees about our involvement. We were offering a percentage of our sales for the week. Got a nice boost in business that stuck with us.

This is a great organization and a great cause. If you are in the restaurant business you should be helping with hunger relief. It just makes sense.

My restaurant did this last year. It was very popular with crew and guests. Just do it!

September is a long time off. We could use some sales help now! If business gets any softer I will need to use the benefits of the program instead of participating in the program.

Claim Jumper Restaurants was honored to partner with SOS in 2008 for the Great American Dine Out. The choice to participate again this year was a quick and easy decision. Using custom table tents, we promoted the Great American Dine Out last year around one of our signature items- our Chocolate Motherlode Cake. We chose to donate a percentage of our cake sales and were pleased to see our cake sales double during the week of the event.
The mission of SOS is admirable and we as a team at CJ are happy to support the cause by our involvement with the Great American Dine Out. Despite the perk of a spike in sales, it was a wonderful opportunity to unite our guests, communities, and employees in the fight against childhood hunger and to help make a difference together.

Avery...thanks for the testimonial. It is a wonderful event for the industry to work together in their own way.

McAlister's Deli participated in this event last year and I can not say enough wonderful things about the entire program. The folks at Share Our Strength do all of the leg work by providing great materials and even press releases. They worked hand-in-hand with our concept to create a program that was easy and effective in its execution. We were able to raise $25,000 last year and can't wait to see how much we can raise for this fantastic cause this year. I encourage every restaurant to participate as we all should be working to eliminate childhood hunger in America.

Great post, Lane. Thanks to all the great restaurants for participating in this program. And thanks to Share Our Strength for doing amazing work in alleviating childhood hunger.

Key for restaurants this year is the flexibility in the way you can promote your restaurant and help raise funds to end childhood hunger in America. Plus, you will be part of the national PR campaign. Aaron McCargo, Jr, of Big Daddy's House on the Food Network will be featured on PSA's encouraging millions of viewers to go to www.GreatAmericanDineOut.org to find a restaurant in their area to dine with. Turnkey materials are available on line that you can begin using the day you register.

Lane,
Thanks so much for your rallying cry for restaurants to support the Great American Dine Out. And thanks to all of you in the foodservice industry who responded, sharing your experience about how this initiative can generate business AND raise critical funds for child hunger!

First Watch Restaurants is proud to participate this year for the first time. It is a wonderful program and a worthwhile cause and we are glad to be able to contribute.

Thank you to all of the restaurants who have, and who are, participating. We are in the business of feeding people. It is rewarding to feed people who cannot afford it.

Thank you for blogging about the growing food crisis in America! This is a serious problem, as food banks are experiencing severe shortages across the country! :(
Anyone wishing to help us spread the word can get a "No Hungry Children" t-shirt designed by 12-year old Katie Stagliano, who appeared on NBC Nightly News a couple weeks ago.
Amazing Kids! is helping Katie launch her dream of "No Hungry Children." By buying and wearing her shirt, you are helping in two ways:
1)Katie is donating her proceeds from the shirt to hunger relief organizations and
2)Wearing the "No Hungry Children" shirt will help bring attention to the growing crisis.
Please consider including literature about Katie and her t-shirt in your restaurants. Email me for more info: info@amazing-kids.org. See Katie and buy her shirt at: www.amazing-kids.org. Thank you!
