Patio dining in Minneapolis
Phil Roberts, the extraordinarily successful restaurateur, concept creator and principal of Parasole Restaurant Holdings, was quoted today in a Minneapolis newspaper about patio seating, a topic you might not think would be of particular concern to someone doing business in an area with an average annual temperature of 45 degrees F. Yet the area's diners enjoy al fresco dining as much as others, allowing Roberts to put a bit more cash in the till.
| There are four good months, from mid May to mid September," he said. "But it can be too cold in May and June. It rains some days. ... You might get 70 days all year as you contend with all these enemies." |

In areas like the Twin Cities, I think that patrons tend to appreciate dining outside more than those of us in more temperate climates. Having dining seating outside may be a bit more on costs and overall operations, but in the long run the restaurant will get more bang from having a busy outside seating section.

I only remember two seasons in my ten years in Mpls - Winter and Road Repair. And with the state bird being the mesquito patio seating is a challenge. Yet, setting by lake Minnetonka on a summer evening is something special.
