Those pesky franchisees
May 5, 2008

The Cleveland Cavaliers whomped the Washington Wizards on Friday for the privilege of playing the Boston Celtics in tomorrow's quarter final opener. Meanwhile, Papa John's got into the act rather unceremoniously during Friday's game, in the nation's capital.

Note the logo above "crybaby." (Note, too, the fan wearing the t-shirt on his head.)

Number 23 is Lebron James' number, the best Cav's player. The appellation "crybaby" scarcely applies to him. But then that's not the point, as we learn here:

The No. 23 T-shirts with the word crybaby in red and green printed on the back were a hit with Washington Wizards fans Friday. They wore them and waived them during Game 6, taunting LeBron James, echoing the trash talk the Wizards hurled at the Cavs during the first round of playoffs.

All in good fun, I suppose. Fun, that is, except for the Cleveland Papa John's stores, which reported receiving angry calls.

What me me laugh, though, is the Washington, D.C., PJ franchisee, who had the t-shirts printed. What was he thinking? LeBron, as most people who follow pro basketball know, is one of the most popular players in the NBA, to say nothing of Cleveland itself, which has dubbed him King James.

Blogger Jon Eick, a Washington Wizards fan who works in marketing, took credit Saturday for causing the buzz about the shirts. When he saw the shirts at Friday's game, he figured Papa Johns didn't have stores in Ohio, he said. After the game, he looked on line and found more than a dozen Papa John's close to The Q.

Papa John's, apparently, has apologized.
