The end for two, sort of
August 8, 2008

There were two restaurant endings this week -- one sad, one a joke.
The joke was a marketing effort on the part of Ruby Tuesday, the beleaguered casual-dining chain, to separate itself from the pack by attempting to demolish an older unit with explosives. A chain official at the scene says the blast is to emphasize how much sameness there is among casual-dining chains. (Ruby Tuesday's has a remodeled most of it stores lately, though the Wall Street jury is still out as to whether that effort was worthwhile.)
In any case, the chain posted the demolition on YouTube. Watch it here.
The other ending is taking place in San Francisco. Rubicon, a cutting edge fine-dining eatery that's owned by NYC-based Myriad Restaurant Group, is closing after 14 years. The San Francisco Chronicle's food editor, Michael Bauer, offers his take on the culinarians, now top-ranked, who passed through Rubicon's kitchen. I might add that service -- particularly wine service -- was lovely, as anyone who dined in this elegant space will tell you.
