Starbucks of popcorn
April 1, 2008

Think you've got it tough growing to 100 units? If so, commiserate here:

There is urgency in the air at Dale & Thomas in Englewood, N.J., where Chief Executive Warren Struhl, its majority stakeholder, wants to prove that his firm can become, if not the "Starbucks of popcorn," as he often says, at least a profitable enterprise.

According to a recent article in Forbes.com, the CEO of the six-year-old chain, which operates 12 company-owned units, is hoping boldly flavored popcorn will tickle the palates of consumers. If so, he's thinking 500, a 1,000 units.

What constitutes bold in the popcorn "industry"? Apparently, wasabi and chili con queso. I know. Been there, done that.

Been to Red Lobster, too. I like the place but I'm always surprised when I
discover that foodies also enjoy the fare. Here, for instance, is an excerpt from a Cleveland-based blogger who is gushing about the seafood chain:

I know, I know, it’s a chain and goes against everything I believe in. But seriously, just try the Ultimate Feast, or even the Admirals feast (this is what my husband had) and I guarantee you’ll agree with me. Yea, Red Lobster! Thank the culinary gods that there is one in every city of every state so everyone that has a passion for the sea can experience this down right goodness!
Of course, that bit about "one in every city of every state" gives me pause. After all, it is April 1.
