Plain and Simple
August 11, 2006

Forgive me for not attending to my blog in recent days. Blame it on a week-long vacation and the heat—dire in Delaware last week, where we sweated it out on the silky sands of Dewey Beach. The skyrocketing temperatures—mostly above 95 degrees—limited our restaurant excursions. I did, however, manage to scarf down a Philly cheesesteak with hot peppers and grilled onions for lunch one day and ate some crabs—the local specialty—one night.

Not that I limited myself to two restaurant meals. Like many vacationers, my in-laws and I ordered scads of pizza, contributing well over $100 to Grotto Pizza, a 19-unit, Delaware-based chain that’s been in business for 45 years. It’s the kind of chain you’re not afraid to love because the products, service and atmosphere make no concession to the latest craze. The only place Grotto’s pizza makers put cheese, for example, is on the pizza. Not inside.
