FDA expands tomato warning
June 10, 2008

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration is expanding its warning nationwide that a salmonellosis outbreak has been linked to consumption of certain raw red plum, red Roma, and red round tomatoes, and products containing these tomatoes.
   FDA traceback review, in addition to production and distribution pattern information, has indicated that tomatoes from the following sources are not associated with the outbreak:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • New York
  • Nebraska
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • West Virginia
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Dominican Republic
  • Guatemala
  • Israel
  • Netherlands
  • Puerto Rico

   FDA recommends that retailers, restaurateurs, and food service operators offer only fresh and fresh cut red Roma, red plum, and round red tomatoes and food products made from these tomatoes for sale or service from the sources listed above. 
   FDA further recommends that retailers, restaurateurs, and food service operators continue to offer cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, from any source.

We are now seeing why so many companies have been utilizing full cooked or radiated products rather than RAW ingredients in there menu mix. I questioned this trend for the past two years, however now I see clearly the reason for it and believe it will coniine. The food value proposition equilibrium for the consumer today balances; better for you, flavor, and traditional products all blended into something with a twist. In industry speak, differentiated does not mean different to the consumer it means familiar. A big part of the industry challenge will be to create new products that are SAFE.
