Will the bailout help your restaurants?
October 3, 2008

   Where do you stand on the financial bailout, which the House of Representatives could vote on as early as today? Will it help put more butts more often in the seats of your restaurants?
   The National Restaurant Association appears
to think so. It cites the lack of available capital and urges lawmakers to "work together to create greater financial stability as quickly as possible."  I think you can assume that means pass the damn $700 billion package.
   The House takes another crack at so doing this afternoon. Yesterday, the Senate approved its version of the rescue plan, 74-25. In case you missed it:

The Senate, for its part, added "sweeteners" that would increase bank deposit insurance and extend tax breaks. Republicans have agitated for both provisions. As it stands now, the bill would temporarily raise the limit on federal deposit insurance to $250,000 from $100,000 per account and provide more than $100 billion in tax breaks, including extending alternative minimum tax relief for middle-class taxpayers and property tax relief.

     My question is: Will these breaks also spell relief for restaurants? With the holiday season nearly here, you're probably counting on shoppers to drop more on meals. Yet practically no one is predicting a season of joyous spending.
   It's tough to say the extent to which the bipartisan Senate tally will influence a House vote. But I'm wondering how much difference you think the measure makes to your restaurants one way or the other. Let me know.

Bailout" to catch up on my taxes I would feel a little release. Is there any help out there for small businesses like myself. ;
