Dunkin' Donuts Goes for the Broke

June 12, 2009
This week, Dunkin' Donuts rolled a new ad campaign, Breakfast NOT Brokefast, to promote its new 99-cent Wake-Up Wrap. The sandwich features a five-inch tortilla filled with half a scrambled egg and a slice of American cheese. The campaign is meant to appeal to cash-strapped customers, showing them that they can get a quick takeout breakfast for under a buck.

Besides television commercials, the campaign will include placing displays in public-area fountains with legs sticking up from the water and signs that say, "Please Do Not Remove Change for 99-cent Items at Dunkin' Donuts." Clever.

The TV spot is also clever. Co-workers in an elevator are talking breakfast. One has tightened his belt to the point of horror-movie creepiness, and another, who holds the Wake-Up Wrap, illustrates that you can eat breakfast without so much, um, sacrifice.

However, those of us who know that the tortilla holds half an egg know that it won't do much toward filling out the fellow's waistline.

Is that actress Elizabeth Moss, who plays Peggy Olsen on Mad Men, holding the breakfast wrap? Sounds like her.
