Cousins Subs Continues Growth in 2009

Regional submarine sandwich chain expands via franchising; unveils fee reductions.

-- Chain Leader, 6/23/2009 7:05:00 AM

PRESS RELEASE: (Menomonee Falls, WI)---Though the public has grown accustomed to gloom and doom business news, Cousins Subs is providing a much-needed bright spot: The Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based sandwich chain has posted impressive growth numbers in the first half of 2009 and will continue this momentum through the second half of the year with additional store openings and a newly-launched franchise fee reduction program.

Cousins has opened seven new restaurants since January and expects to open eight more franchisee-owned restaurants by the end of the year. According to Mark Cairns, Cousins' director of franchise sales, the majority of these new restaurants will be in Cousins' home state of Wisconsin but several will be in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. The company is also targeting western Wisconsin, central Arizona, eastern Minnesota and northern Illinois for growth in the coming months.

"As Cousins continues to expand, our commitment to working with qualified franchisees does as well," said Cairns. "Whether this will be their first business or their fourteenth, what's most important to us is that each franchisee is extremely involved in the daily operation of their restaurant and is an active member of their community."

Along with the new openings, 2009 brings a franchise fee reduction program to new and existing Cousins franchisees. New franchisees will pay a $12,500 fee per store - down from $25,000 - and existing franchisees looking to open additional stores will pay a flat $5,000 fee (the company previously charged $20,000 for a second restaurant and $15,000 for a third) through the end of 2009.

"We're hoping both new and existing franchisees will see this program as a silver lining during these lean times and we're happy to help these people achieve their goals of owning their own businesses," said Cairns. "These reduced fees paired with lower lease rates and increased availability of contractors and potential employees will assist our franchisees in getting their operations off the ground faster."

Founded in 1972, Cousins Subs is a restaurant specializing in East Coast-style submarine sandwiches made with the finest ingredients served on a variety of freshly-baked breads, along with salads, soups, chips and soft drinks. Cousins Subs currently operates 15 company-owned units and 135 franchised locations in six states. By the end of 2010, the company hopes to continue its strategic regional growth and open an additional 25 units throughout the Midwest including Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Arizona.
