Well Drinks: Restaurants Develop Nutrient-Rich Beverages

Restaurant-chain operators are helping customers slake thirsts and boost wellness with nutrient-rich beverages.

By David Farkas, Senior Editor -- Chain Leader, 9/1/2009 12:00:00 AM

Today, one of the keys to marketing beverages is making them good for you in novel ways. A survey last year by the nonprofit International Food Information Council, for instance, found that 92 percent of consumers report they are interested in food and beverages that lead to health and wellness. The Centers for Disease Control's Healthy People 2010 project includes guidelines encouraging the consumption of a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Those notions haven't been lost on several restaurant chains, now fueling their alcoholic and nonalcoholic offerings with such foods, mainly in the form of "super fruits."
